Becoming a Foster Family

The first step to becoming a foster family is understanding the role of fostering.

By reading these pages you will learn the answers to some important questions about foster care. You may however have other questions so we invite you to call us for further information.

During your first call, we will take some information from you that will allow us to initially find out if you have the space in your life to foster.

If we feel that you can foster for us, we will come out and visit you in your home. This is an opportunity for us both to find out more about each other. If we feel that you can offer a child a home and you would like the opportunity to have more information, we invite you to a two day training course facilitated by our experienced social work staff.

The Homefinding and fostering Agency will ask for your permission to conduct police checks and review medical and departmental records. All information is confidential. At the end of the information session you will be in a better position to decide whether fostering a child is suitable for you and your family.

The final steps to becoming a foster carer involves a social worker completing an assessment of you and your family. This can take up to four months. But once done, we will be in a position to know about you and your family so we can best match you with a child.
